Driving through an "erg" (sea of sand dunes)

... is not so simple.

Obviously you need to follow the general direction you wish to take but be prepared to go extra miles to find "passes" across the erg. Some dunes are too steep to drive so you keep looking for dunes that you car can tackle.

Then there is the "crest" to overcome.

- Too slow you get bogged, wheels hanging on both sides of the crest...

and need to shove, push or pull.

- Too fast you literally "fly" off the crest, with 2 or 4 wheels in the air... landing can become hazardous.

You have short and long down hills.

- Short ones are no problems, provided you have passed the crest...
- For long ones, you must be ready to accelerate in order to keep your car in control...

Turning over sideways.

The driver must also make sure that the car will not turn over sideways. As side slopes are tackled, one of your wheel can start to dig-in and unless you are careful to take the appropriate corrective action => steer into the slope, your car can easily turn over.
